South Los Angeles Area Representative

 

The Office of Neighborhood and Community Services proactively advances the Mayor’s vision for the City of Los Angeles by broadening opportunities for civic engagement among its residents and other community partners. The Office serves as the most immediate point of contact between the residents of the City of Los Angeles and their government.  It is responsible for listening closely to the concerns and interests of the people and communicating them through proper channels.  The Office cultivates partnerships that work towards organizing and realizing the vision of Los Angeles as one city specifically in the areas of community service, education, public safety, economic development, and the environment.

 

The South Los Angeles Area Representative will report to the Area Director of Neighborhood and Community Services.  Responsibilities include:

 

-          Advance the Mayor’s agenda through community partnerships, community service, community organizing, and constituent work in South L.A.

-          Develop and maintain relationships with key community stakeholders in area.

-          Assist the Area Director in supporting organizational and program innovations; and in developing strategies, systems and procedures to ensure Office of Neighborhood and Community Services quality and accountability.

-          Staff Mayor at community events/meetings and prepare briefing materials.

 

-          Work with stakeholders to implement the Mayor’s initiatives focused on promoting community service, strengthening communities and supporting local leadership.

 

-          Form partnerships with local leaders and organizations that are aligned with the Mayor’s agenda in order to address and redress key agenda issues in South L.A.

-          Maintain relations with city departments, city commissioners and council offices.

-          Communicate the Mayor’s policies and positions to leaders in community and other organizations.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

-          A high interest in the work of Mayor Villaraigosa and the potential of the City of Los Angeles.

-          Undergraduate degree required preferably in related area.

-          5+ years experience in a relevant area of work.

-          Foreign language fluency preferred.

-          Extensive knowledge of South Los Angeles and a willingness to work long hours and weekends.

-          Superior analytic, community organizing, and oral and written communication skills.

-          Ability to manage multiple tasks, multiple goals, solve problems, and establish priorities among assignments.

-          Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated cross-cultural sensitivity.
